SIT BACK, RELAX, & ENJOY THE RIDE

November 12, 2014

I just returned from a magical trip to Disney World with my family. This was my 6th time there, and it truly never gets old. Aside from all of the fun rides, shows, and programs offered throughout the park, there are some pretty great thoughts and lessons that one can learn from time well spent in the wonderful world of Disney. “A wish is a dream your heart makes”- from Sleeping Beauty, “Let It Go” – from Frozen, “Hakuna Matata”- from the Lion King, and so on.

But one saying that continuously played on our bus rides to and from the parks and stuck with me was, “sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride”.  I jokingly turned to my mom and said… “wouldn’t that be nice if that was our daily motto?”.  But the truth is, this is a great lesson and practice from which we can all benefit. To truly enjoy the ride, or journey, of life- instead getting so stressed out or worked up over every day nuances.

So, I thought about some ways that we can achieve this, and who better to share them with than you!

HERE ARE MY TOP 6 TIPS TO HELP YOU SIT BACK, RELAX, & ENJOY THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFETIME:

1. BE PRESENT:

In order to really and truly enjoy every moment of life- no matter where you are or who you’re with- you must tune into the present moment. By doing so you allow yourself the opportunity to stay in touch with yourself and your beliefs, to connect closely with others, to invest your full attention and heart into every situation, and in turn, experience more satisfaction and joy. Additionally, immersing yourself in the present moment helps remove the constant chatter in your mind, which will prevent negative thoughts and feelings, stress, anxiety, worry, etc.

2. BE SELFISH

Turning back to my recent trip- there’s a reason that on plane rides they tell adults to put their oxygen masks on before assisting anyone else. You need to take care of YOU before you can fully serve or help others. If you are not looking out for yourself and practicing self- care you are going to get overstressed, exhausted, burnt out, cranky, irritable and stuck in a bad funk. We’re all so busy these days and have a lot to juggle, and while you may feel the need to do for others, if you don’t put yourself first, you won’t be able to produce the best version of you for yourself or others.

3. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY:

How we feel is greatly affected by what we eat and put into our bodies.  When we feed our bodies and minds clean, whole, nourishing foods full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, protein, and digestion-friendly foods, our energy skyrockets, our sugar stabilizes- therefore controlling our cravings and moods, and we feel calmer and much happier.

4. LAUGH & HAVE FUN:imgres-1

It’s important to have some fun on a regular basis and not take life so seriously. Incorporate social plans or some “me” time throughout your week in order to give you something fun and exiting to look forward to and lift your mood.  Besides, laughter is the best medicine ;).

5. BREATH:

Our breath is something that we all need, but many of us don’t use it to it’s full capacity. By tuning into your breath and shifting your focus to the inhales and exhales of your body, you will slow your mind, calm your body, and as mentioned, help snap you into the present moment (which we already discussed is important for your bliss and satisfaction).

6. PRACTICE YOGA:

All forms of exercise are great- what’s most important is that you move your body, get your heart rate up, improve your circulation, and sweat out toxins. That being said, yoga really takes it to another level.  Through the practice of yoga you learn to truly turn inwards and connect with your body.  Yoga also helps you disconnect from the chaos of life and turn off the mental chatter, which will help you be present in the moment (notice this keeps popping up!), and keep a sense of composure and calm through the ups and downs in life.
