Protein bars. Those tasty and easy snacks that can quickly make for a bad situation.
And although I promote enjoying a relaxing meal that is well-balanced and made of clean, whole foods, the reality is, we don’t always have the time. And when you’re in a pinch and need a quick meal or snack on-the-go, you want something easy, convenient, tasty, and healthy. Unfortunately, hitting all of these points can prove to be challenging, especially when trying to eat well and feel nourished and energized to continue about your day.
Protein bars and granola bars have gained popularity over the years and are conveniently located everywhere from your grocery store to gas stations. However, most of these bars are loaded with sugar, poor quality dairy, empty carbs, and so on…
But, not all hope is lost. There are some great bars out there that use clean sources of protein (like rice or quinoa), nuts and seeds, nut butters, fruit, seasonings, and even dark chocolate. Below are three of my favorite bars that are great for a snack or even a light meal in a pinch:
- gomacro MACROBAR: These are great for more of a “meal replacement” as they have a higher calorie count. As you can see on the label above, they’re gluten-free, vegan (which makes them dairy-free), GMO-free, soy-free, and organic. And they’re FULL of good, clean protein, healthy fats, and delicious flavors! My favorite are Protein Purity (sunflower butter + chocolate), which has 10 grams of protein, healthy fat, and omega-3 and fiber from flax, and the Sweet Rejuvenation (cashew butter), which is high in magnesium and made with only 4 healthy ingredients! And they’re as delicious as they are nutritious ;).
- KIND bars: These are my go-to choice for a quick snack that keeps me full and satiated and doesn’t zap my energy like other foods. These too are made of nuts, seeds, spices, and clean protein and there are a variety of flavors to choose from. The one thing to be aware of is the sugar content. Flavors like the Dark Chocolate Mocha Almond (which is delicious!) only have 5 grams of sugar and are better options than others.
- LARABAR UBER: LARABARs are known for their chewy delicious bars that are full of very basic and clean ingredients: nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and seasonings. And while they’re delicious and healthy in moderation, they do have higher sugar counts because of the dried fruit. Welcome LARABAR UBER, which still keeps the ingredient list short and clean (think almonds, pecans, dates, vanilla extract, and dark chocolate-to name a few), but the sugar count is lower and the protein count is slightly higher.
So, the next time you need something on-the-go, satisfying, and healthy, keep one of these bars in your bag to grab in a pinch to keep you energized and your hunger in check.
